Here's a horrible thought: what percentage of the people who saw the movie version of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy this year thought to themselves, "Oh, a Babel Fish, I get it—it's a reference to the translation web site."
I know! It's terrible!
By the way, my boyfriend and I came to the conclusion that this blog (and you?) is the perfect mixe-up of us two. I study linguistics, he studies japanese. We both like science fiction and anime (he's really into it) as well as comics. Plus, he loves computers and technology.
Erm. Well. That's about it.
Now you know that, and I hope it makes you really happy. :)

None! No one saw that movie, who hadn't read the book! All is safe with the uniberse.

Except for my two pre-adolescent kids maybe... and even if they had read the book, from their perspective the book and the website both pre-existed them. Without research on their part (as opposed to memory on mine), who's to say which originally coined the phrase?
