I seem to be doing a lot of music-blogging lately [isn't this supposed to be a linguistics blog?-ed. Get out of my head, Mickey Kaus's editor!], and when I saw this meme over on Byzantium's Shores, I couldn't help myself.
Favorite Beatles song: That's hard. "Yesterday", maybe.
Favorite solo song by a former Beatle: I can't think of any besides "Imagine" (which I find annoying).
Favorite Rolling Stones song: "Paint It Black"
Favorite Bob Dylan song: I don't like Dylan at all.
Favorite Pixies song: "Head On"
Favorite Prince song: "Let's Go Crazy"
Favorite Michael Jackson song: Hmm, that's tough, because I sort of like a lot of them, but don't really like any of them.
Favorite Metallica song: Not really a fan.
Favorite Public Enemy song: That appearance by Chuck D in Sonic Youth's "Kool Thing".
Favorite Depeche Mode song: Either "Are People People?" (a remix of "People Are People") or "Big Muff".
Favorite Cure song: Either "Primary" or "A Night Like This"
Favorite song that most of your friends haven’t heard: I've been recently enjoying "Ladykillers" by Lush.
Favorite Beastie Boys song: "Sabotage" (with Nathan Wind as Cochise)
Favorite Police song: "Synchronicity II"
Favorite Sex Pistols song: "Anarchy in the UK"
Favorite song from a movie: Hmm. For real movie music, "The Asteroid Field" from The Empire Strikes Back soundtrack. For a song used in a movie...maybe Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever?" in Highlander. That moment when we see that his wife is growing old while he's not aging, and Freddie sings, "...when love must die", that always gets me.
Favorite Blondie song: "Dreaming"
Favorite Genesis song: Another band where I don't like any one song enough to call if a favorite, but maybe "Misunderstanding". I wanted to choose "In the Air Tonight", but, that's Phil Collins.
Favorite Led Zeppelin song: Too many tied at 8-out-of-10 to choose.
Favorite INXS song: "Don't Change"
Favorite Weird Al song: "Angry White Boy Polka"
Favorite Pink Floyd song: "Comfortably Numb", which I have a whole rant about that I inflict on stoners whenever possible. It's not about being high, burnout, it's about being catatonic and withdrawn from reality. (Plus, when I was a kid I had a high fever, and I had that same "my hands felt just like two balloons" halucination.)
Favorite cover song: Tough call—I'm a big fan of covers because I love to hear different takes on the same song. Some possiblities: "The Boys of Summer" by The Ataris (which must be a good cover, because I don't like the original), Frente's version of "Bizarre Love Triangle", 311's "Love Song", the Cardigans' "Iron Man", and the Ukrainians' "Batyar" (a Ukrainian-language cover of "Big Mouth Strikes Again" by the Smiths). [Update: Ruben Blades's cover of XTC's "The Man Who Sailed Around His Soul" just came on my nano. That's good too.] [Update: And Information Society's cover of the "Doomsday Theme" from Star Trek.]
Favorite dance song: Don't dance, so don't feel qualified to have an opinion.
Favorite U2 song: "New Year's Day"
Favorite disco song: Hmm, not a big fan of disco. "Brick House"?
Favorite The Who song: "Pinball Wizard"
Favorite Elton John song: I don't think I could hum an Elton John song if my life depended on it.
Favorite Clash song: Never got into the Clash.
Favorite David Bowie song: "Ashes to Ashes", I think.
Favorite Nirvana song: "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I know it's the obvious choice, but it really is an awesome song.
Favorite Snoop Dogg song: No idea.
Favorite Ice Cube song: No idea.
Favorite Johnny Cash song: "Ring of Fire", but "The Beast in Me" is a close second.
Favorite R.E.M. song: "So. Central Rain"
Favorite Elvis song: Hmm, no strong opinion. Maybe "Hound Dog".
Favorite cheesy-ass country song: Pass.
Favorite Billy Joel song: Pass.
Favorite Bruce Springsteen song: What-ever.
Favorite Big Audio Dynamite song: Very catchy, uniformly annoying.
Favorite New Order song: "True Faith"
Favorite Neil Diamond song: That one where he sounds like he's about to give himself a hernia. Oh, that's all of them.
Favorite Squeeze song: "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)"
Favorite Smiths song: That's a hard one. "Frankly Mr. Shankly"? "London"? "Golden Lights"?
Favorite Tragically Hip Song: You know, I actually owned a Tragically Hip album for years on cassette, and I can't recall a single note. (Sorry, guys! Or possibly gals!)
[Now playing: "High Monkey Monk" by the Cocteau Twins]
It's more like an extensive annotated list than a meme. Nice to see LZ scoring well.
